Can you block WhatsApp Status and Channels?
People ask for this constantly. The honest answer is: not cleanly through DNS, a proxy or MDM, because Status and Channels are not separate network services. Here is what is possible.
WhatsApp Status and Channels are features inside the app, not separate websites. They use the same encrypted connection and often the same media servers as normal chats. That makes “block only those two” much harder than it sounds.
Why DNS and proxy blocking is not selective
A DNS filter sees a hostname such as mmg.whatsapp.net. A proxy sees the same host for HTTPS. Neither sees the URL path or which screen inside WhatsApp made the request. Status and Channels share those media hosts with chat photos, videos, voice notes and documents.
If you block the media host, you may stop Status and Channels — but you can also break normal chat media. If you leave it open, you cannot target only the two features. That is the trade-off, and anyone who says otherwise is overselling.
What does not work reliably
- DNS blocklists — host-level only, with collateral damage.
- HTTP proxies — same limitation for HTTPS.
- TLS interception — WhatsApp pins certificates and uses a custom protocol; interception is fragile and not a product.
- MDM — cannot disable a tab inside a third-party app.
What actually works
If the goal is to remove those features completely, the reliable options are at the app or device level:
- Guided Access — on the phone, disable touch over the Status and Channels tabs. Chats keep working. It is a physical workaround, not central management.
- Block WhatsApp entirely — if the app is the problem, MDM can block it or the App Store can prevent installation.
- Use a managed wrapper — a controlled WhatsApp Web wrapper can hide those sections in the page, but it is a different app experience.
- Manual account settings — mute Status updates and unfollow Channels. It does not remove the tabs, but it reduces the feed.
What filttr can do
filttr can lock the App Store, block WhatsApp entirely, filter Safari and supported web content, force DNS, and manage the phone. It cannot surgically remove one tab from an encrypted third-party app. We would rather tell you that clearly than sell you a blocklist that breaks your chat media.
If you want to test a domain block
It is possible to test a media-host block on one device and see what breaks. Start with one host, check Status, Channels, normal text, photos, voice notes and calls, then decide whether the trade-off is acceptable. Do not apply it to a whole school before testing.
Frequently asked questions
Can filttr block only WhatsApp Status?
No. Status is a feature inside the encrypted app. DNS, proxy and MDM filtering cannot reliably separate it from normal chat media.
Will blocking mmg.whatsapp.net break chats?
It may block Status and Channels, but it can also break photos, videos, voice notes and documents in normal chats. Test on one device first.
Does MDM have a WhatsApp setting for this?
No. MDM can block or manage the app, but WhatsApp does not expose a switch for disabling only Status or Channels.
What is the cleanest workaround?
Guided Access with the Status and Channels tab areas disabled on the phone. It keeps chats working, but it is a device-level workaround, not central management.
